there are two sphere having same charge q and radii R and 2R. what will be the charge on each sphere if both are connected and then separated?

Expert Answer
When two spheres are connected by wire, both spheres will have common potential.
Let q1 be the charge on sphere of radius R . Let q2 be the charge on sphere of radius 2R .
Potential of sphere of radius R having charge q1 = q1 / [ 4π εo R ]
Potential of sphere of radius 2R having charge q2 = q2 / [ 4π εo (2R) ]
q1 / [ 4π εo R ] = q2 / [ 4π εo (2R) ]
hence, 2q1 = q2....................(1)
Initially, before connecting the spheres by wire, each sphere was holding charge q .
Hence q1 + q2 = 2q ................(2)
by solving eqn. (1) and (2), we get q2 = (4/3)q and q1 = (2/3)q
