The magnification for a mirror is -3. How are u and v related? please explain

Magnification m of mirror image is given by, m = begin mathsize 12px style negative v over u end style, where v is the ditance between image and mirror and
u is the distance between mirror and object.
 
we have m = -3, it means magnification of image is three times ths size of object. Negative sign indicates we get inverted image.
 
also image-to-mirror distance is three times of object-to-mirror distance
