Expert Answer
Assume a mass M is kept inside a cubical box as shown in figure. We are interested in the gravitational flux passing through the surface of cube.
With Mass M as centre, let us construct a sphere of radius R.
Gravitational field E at a point on the sphere which is at a distance R from mass M is given by
Above field is spherically symmetric and only in radial direction and also inversly proportional to R2 . Flux through the surface of sphere due to enclosed mass M is given by
as can be seen from figure the flux passing out of sphere is same as the flux passing out of all the faces of cubical box. Since the total flux through the closed surface is independent of distance, we can conclude the total flux out of the closed surface depends only on the enclosed mass and not on the shape of the enclosed surface.
