Q.16 Why did India change its economic policies in 1991?

NEP was initiated by the government in 1991 because

  • Increase in fiscal deficit raised the burden of the government to repay loans with interest, and thus, India was caught in a debt trap.
  • Unfavourable balance of payment increased the burden of the foreign debt service.
  • Reduction in foreign exchange reserves led to a situation where the Indian government mortgaged gold reserves to the World Bank to repay borrowed loans.
