Expert Answer
When electron travels a distance l and is subjected to electric field that gives angular deflection θ , then vertical deflection is l sin θ as shown in figure.
Since acceleration is in a direction perpendicular to the motion of electron, we get the relation that relates vertical deflection and acceleration a as
l sinθ = (1/2) a t2 ................ (1)
where t is time travelled through the length of plates , hence if v is inital speed of electron , t = l/v
Hence, by substituting t = l/v and after simplification, we get acceleration a from eqn.(1) as
a = ( 2 v2 sinθ ) / l ............................. (2)
Force acting on electron, F = m a = q E = q (V/d) .................(3)
where m is mass of electron, q is charge of electron , E is electric field intensity and
V is potential difference across plates that are separated by a distance d .
Hence from eqn.(2) and eqn.(3) , we get potential difference V as
V = ( 2 × d × m × v2 sinθ )/ ( q × l ) ................(4)
Let us substitute following values fro respective quantities in eqn.(4)
d = 0.5 × 10-2 m ; m = 9.1 × 10-31 kg ; v = 8 × 106 m/s ; sinθ ≈ θ = 0.04 ;
q = 1.602 × 10-19 C ; l = 2 × 10-2 m
by substituting these values of respective quantities in eqn. (4) , we get Potential differece V = 7.3 Volt
