Figure shows a light ray incident on a prism at an incident angle 40º . Angle of prism is 60º .
If angle of refraction is r , then we can see from figure, angle of incidence on other side of prism is (60-r).
If the refractive index of material of prism is 1.5, then we have by law of refraction,
sin40/sin(r) = 1.5 or sin(r) = sin 40 /1.5 = 0.4285 or r = sin-1 (0.4285) = 25.37°
if angle of emergence is e, then we have , sin(e) / sin(60-r) = 1.5
Hence , sin(e) = 1.5×sin(60-25.37) = 0.852
hence angle of emergence = sin-1 (0.852 ) = 58.5°
