Yes, the understanding of working of electric motor and electric generator is very important.
Not just from your exam point of view, but also to increase your scientific aptitude.
 
A better way to understand these concepts are:
 
For electric motor
- To understand that the current carrying conductor develops a magnetic field around it for the time the current is being passed.
- This temporary magnetic field when treated with the magnetic field of a permanent and strong magnet, experiences force and movement due to successive repulsion and attraction.
- This phenomenon is used to get a controlled movement from a device we call an electric motor.
 
For electric generator
- To understand the working of electric generator, we need to understand the process of electromagnetic induction.
- This phenomneon is used in a systematic manner to obtain electricity from changing magnetic fields.
 
 This is how you can relate the concepts in a sequence to understand the working of both the electric motor and generator.
