in que 23 of ncert, why does the current i does not change when resistance is changed from R to X.
actully which current is referred to i.

Yes. The current does not change because this is the maximum current that is drawn from the cell.
When, the resistance changes from R to X, the current does not change but the potential drop across the resistance changes.
Due to this change in potential drop, the balancing length changes and hence we can find the new balancing length.
