Expert Answer
Pneumatophores are modified adventitious roots which laterally grow upwards in hydrophytic trees such as mangroves for varying distances. These are aerial roots which help in the exchange of gases in these hydrophytic plants. These plants show negative geotropism and grow pneumatophores outside the water in upward direction which help them in the exchange of gases.
