Satellite loses its height of orbit, if its energy is decreased.

When satellite is orbiting a circular path of radius R, its tangential speed v is given by

m ( v2 / R ) = ( G M m ) / R2 ...................(1)

where m is mass of satellite, G is gravitational constant and M is mass of earth.

LHS of eqn.(1) is centripetal force and RHS of eqn.(1) is gravitational force.

If we substitute the relation between tangential speed v and orbiting period T as

m v = ( 2 π R ) /T

in eqn.(1)  and after simplification we get,

begin mathsize 14px style T space equals square root of open parentheses fraction numerator 4 space pi squared over denominator G space M end fraction close parentheses end root space space R to the power of 3 divided by 2 end exponent end style
