If an orbiting satellite suddenly loses height, will there be any change in time period ofit?

Expert Answer
Satellite loses its height of orbit, if its energy is decreased.
When satellite is orbiting a circular path of radius R, its tangential speed v is given by
m ( v2 / R ) = ( G M m ) / R2 ...................(1)
where m is mass of satellite, G is gravitational constant and M is mass of earth.
LHS of eqn.(1) is centripetal force and RHS of eqn.(1) is gravitational force.
If we substitute the relation between tangential speed v and orbiting period T as
m v = ( 2 π R ) /T
in eqn.(1) and after simplification we get,
