Expert Answer
The nature of an image can be judged as following:
For a mirror:
1) If the image is formed at the same side as object, then it is real image. This is known when image distance is negative. Otherwise it is virtual image.
2) If the size of image is smaller/bigger than object, then we say that image is diminished/enlarged respectively. This is found by finding magnification.
3) If the magnification is negative, then the image is said to be inverted, and if it is positive, then image is erect.
For a lens:
1) If the image is formed at the same side as object, then it is virtual image. This is known when image distance is negative. Otherwise, it is real image.
2) If the size of image is smaller/bigger than object, then we say that image is diminished/enlarged respectively. This is found by finding magnification.
3) If the magnification is negative, then the image is said to be inverted, and if it is positive, then image is erect.
