Permutations are a way of counting arrangements:

Example : abc, acb, bac, bca, cab,cba are 6 different arrangements or permutations.

Combinations are a way of counting the number of groups.

Example: The 6 different arrangements above constitute one group or one combination.

Suppose we want to find the number of ways to arrange the three letters in the word CAT in different two-letter groups

where CA is different from AC and there are no repeated letters.

Permutation:

Because order matters, we're finding the number of permutations of size 2 that can be taken from a set of size 3.

This is often written 3_P_2. We can list them as:CA CT AC AT TC TA

Combination

When we want to find the number of combinations of size 2 without repeated letters that can be made from

the three letters in the word CAT, order doesn't matter; AT is the same as TA. We can write out the three

combinations of size two that can be taken from this set of size three:CA CT AT

The essential difference

between a permutation and a combination is:"In a permutation, each object is considered to be distinct,

whereas,

in a combination, all objects are considered to be alike and indistinct."

In other words,"A combination is simply a choice of objects, while a

permutation is a rearrangement or (sometimes, a re-alignment) of the choice of objects."

How many numbers of four digit greater than 2300 can be formed with digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5and 6 no digit being repeated in any number ?
Given that the number should be greater than 2300 and the number of digits is four.
Therefore, the numbers with 3,4,5,6 in thousands place will be greater than 2.
But if the number in thousands place is 2, then there is a restriction in hundreds place to make the number greater than 2.
Let us consider two cases.
Case 1:
When 2 occurs at thousands place:

The thousands place can be filled up by 2 in 1 way
The hundreds place can be filled up by any of the numbers 3,4,5,6 in 4 ways.
So the remaining two places can be filledup in  ways.
Therefore the total numbers formed inthis case = 1 x 4 x  = 80
Case 2:
When 3,4,5, or 6 occurs at thousands place.
The thousands place can be filled in 4 different ways
So the remaining three places can be filledup in 6P3 ways.
Therefore the total numbers formed inthis case = 4 x 6P3 = 480

Therefore, the required number = 80 +480 = 560

Combination:
The English alphabet has 5 vowels and 21 consonants. How many words with two differnt vowels and 2 different consonants can be formed from the alphabet?

Given : 5 vowels and 21 consonants.

select : 2 vowels and 2 consonants

We can choose 2 vowels from 5 in 5C2 ways = 10 ways
We can choose 2 consonants from 21 in 21C2 ways = 210 ways

Now these selected 4 letters can be arranged in 4! ways = 24 ways

B y space f u n d a m e n t a l space t h e o r e m comma space t o t a l space n u m b e r space o f space w a y s left parenthesis w o r d s right parenthesis space equals space 10 cross times 210 cross times 24 space equals space 50400
