Importance of the electric field in electrostatics:

  1. It is an elegant way of characterising the electrical environment of a system of charges.
  2. The electric field at a point gives the force that a charge would experience if placed at that point.
  3. It is a characteristic of the system of charges and is independent of the test charge which is placed at that point in space.
  4. If we consider the effect of force on a charge due to motion of another charge near it, then the force is felt after a delay. This delay is explained by the concept of electric field.

ln a Millikan’s oil drop experiment, the horizontal plates are 1.5 cm apart. With the electric field switch off an oil drop is observed to fall with a steady velocity of 2.5×10^{-2}  cm  s^{-1}.  When the field is switched on the upper plate being positive, the drop just remains stationary when the   p.d.   between the plates is 1500 V.
