- In the manufacture of fertilisers such as ammonium sulphate [(NH4)2SO4] and superphosphate of lime [Ca (H2PO4)2 + CaSO4].
- In the manufacture of explosives such as tri-nitro toluene and picric acid.
- In the manufacture of acids such as nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid and acetic acid.
- In the synthesis of compounds such as sodium sulphate and ferrous sulphate.
