following observation are recorded in capillary tube experiment to determine surface tension T of water.diameter of capillary tube D=0.125cm,rise of water in capillary =1.43cm.formula T=rhgh/2(where r=radius ,d,g are constant).find the permissible percentage error of suface tension?

Surface tension begin mathsize 12px style T space equals space fraction numerator rho space g space r space h over denominator 2 end fraction end style
where ρ is density, g is acceleration due to gravity, r is radius and h is capillary rise .

Since density and acceleration due to gravity is constant, % error in surface tension is given by,

(ΔT/T)×100 = [ (Δr/r)×100 ] + [ (Δh/h)×100 ] ................... (1)

from the given data, if diameter of capillary tube is  0.125 cm,
let us assume the least count of measuremnt is 0.001 cm.
hence percentage error in radius = (.001/0.125)×100  = 0.8

Similarly , if capillary rise is 1.43 cm, let us assume the least count of measurement is 0.01 cm .
hence percentage error in capillary rise measuremnet = (0.01/1.43)×100 ≈ 0.7

hence from eqn.(1), we get permissible % error in surface tension = 0.8+0.7 = 1.5
