 The spatial resolving power of an optical instrument, such as a telescope or a microscope, is a measure of its ability to distinguish detail in the structure of the object being viewed, and in particular the ability to form separate distinct images of two very small point objects which are close together. The smaller this object separation can be, the smaller is the limit of resolution of the instrument.
