Expert Answer
- The phenomenon in which two or more equivalent structures for a compound can be written which involve identical positions of atoms but differ in the arrangements of electrons is called resonance and the structures are called resonating structures.
- The structure of molecule is said to be a hybrid structure of various resonating structures and is known as resonance hybrid.
- Carbon carbon bonds in benzene are equivalent having bond length 1.40A which is intermediate between the lengths of carbon single bond and carbon carbon double bond.
- The structure of benzene is a hybrid of various resonating structures.
- The two structures (A) and (B) given by Kekule are main contributing structures.
- The hybrid structure is represented by inserting a circle or a dotted circle in hexagon as shown in (C) and (D).
- The circle represents the six electrons which are delocalised over the six carbon atoms of the benzene ring.
