we must first adopt a sign convention fo rmeasuring distances when solving problems that involves spherical mirrors.
Now a days, Cartesian sign convention is followed by many international researchers and students.

According to  cartesian sign convention, reflective side of mirror is facing -ve x-axis and pole of the mirror is placed
at origin. All distances are measured from the pole of the mirror .

Incident ray is assumed so that it is coming from a point at the -ve x-axis side and directed towards pole of the mirror at origin.

The distances measured in the same direction as the incident light are taken as positive and those measured in the
direction opposite to the direction of incident light are taken as negative as shown in figure.

The heights measured upwards with respect to x-axis and normal to the principal axis (x-axis) of the mirror are taken
as positive as shown in figure. The heights measured downwards are taken as negative.

Hence in example 9.4, u is the distance from object to mirror . By sign convention u is -ve because this distance is measured
from pole of the mirror at origin along the direction of -x-axis ( opposite direction of incident ray )
