Plant tissue culture is a practice of propagating plants under sterile conditions, often to produce clones of a plant.

Process of tissue culture:

  • Plants are grown in test tubes.
  • A small part of the plant is allowed to grow on a nutrient medium containing all nutrients and hormones necessary for the plant growth.
  • The cells of this small part divide and form mass of cells called the callus.
  • Callus develops plantlets.
  • The plantlets are then transferred into the soil to grow as new individuals.

Using tissue culture, many plants can be grown from one parent under disease-free condition. This technique is commonly used for ornamental plants.
