Expert Answer
Equivalent capacitance C :- 1/C = (1/4)+(1/12)+(1/6) = (1/2) or C = 2 μf
Charge on 4μf capacitor at breakdown voltage 10 V, ( q1 = C1V ) , 4×10 = 40 μC
Charge on 12μf capacitor at breakdown voltage 6 V, ( q2 = C2V ) , 12×6 = 72 μC
Charge on 6μf capacitor at breakdown voltage 8 V, ( q3 = C3V ) , 6×8 = 48 μC
Since equal charge is hold by each capacitor when capacitors are connected in series,
we can charge the given system of capacitors only 40 μC
For charge of 40 μC, voltage applied to the given system of capacitors, V = q/C = 40 μC /2 μf = 20 V
Hence breakdown voltage of the given system of capacitors = 20 V
