A point object O is placed between two plane mirror M1 and M2 10mm apart.The distance of object O from M2 is 2mm.Find the distance of the first three images formed by mirror M2.

1) The object O acts as the first source for M2. So, the image will form 2 mm inside the mirror M2. Hence, the first image distance is 2 mm.
 
2) Now, the object O is the source of mirror M1 also. The object distance, in this case, will be 8 mm. So, it will form an image 8 mm inside mirror M1.
 
3) Now, this image will act as the second source for mirror M2. Total distance is 8 mm + 10 mm = 18 mm. Therefore, the distance of image formed inside M2 will also be 18 mm.
 
4) The first image formed by M2 at 2 mm will now act as a source for mirror M1. So, the total distance for object is 2 mm + 10 mm = 12 mm. So, the image formed by M1 will be 12 mm inside it. This image will now act as third source for M2. Object distance is 12 mm + 10 mm = 22 mm. Hence, the image distance will be 22 mm.
 
5) So, the first three images formed by mirror M2 are at a distance of 2 mm, 18 mm and 22 mm.
