a cask contains 72 litres of a mixture of wine and water in the ratio 3:1. how much of the mixture must be drawn off and substituted by water so that the ratio of wine and water in the resulting mixture in the cask becomes half and half

1/2:1/2 becomes 1:1
72 liters in total
let wine = 3k
water = k
3k + k = 72
4k = 72
k = 18
wine = 54 liters
water = 18 liters
let y be the liters that needs to be replaced and then added to make ratio same
when we remove x from total 3/4x will be wine and 1/4x will be water
wine remaining 54-3/4x, water remaining 18-1/4x
now x liters of water is added
so
wine=54-3/4x
water=18-1/4x+x
ratio is 1:1
ans is x, solve
