CBSE Class 12-science Answered
A electric dipole placed at an angle 60 with an uniform electric field of magnitude 3N/C . It experience torque of 8 Nm and the length of the dipole is 3 cm , calculate the magnitude of the either charge of thr dipole and potential energy of the dipole.

Expert Answer
Torque due to dipole moment τ = p × E = q×l×E×sinθ .......... (1)
where τ is torque, p = ql is diplole moment with charges +q and -q separated by disltance l,
E is elecrtic field and θ is the angle between dipole and field direction.
let us substitute the given values in eqn(1) to get q, q×3×10-2×3×(√3/2) = 8 ................(2)
solving for q, in eqn.(2), we get q = 103 C
Potential energy = -p.E = -q×l×E×cosθ = -103×3×10-2×3×(1/2) = 4.635 J
