  • Hydrogen has been placed in group 1 with alkali metals in the Mendeleev’s periodic table.
  • The reason is because hydrogen combines with halogens like oxygen, chlorine and sulphur just like alkali metals to form compounds having similar formulae.
  • Since hydrogen resembled properties similar to alkali metals, it was place in group 1.
