Why NH4Cl is ionic and covalent and dative bond
Asked by gattimadhavi434 | 25 Dec, 2023, 10:15: AM
Dear Student,
In ammonium chloride, the bonds formed between one nitrogen and three hydrogen atoms are covalent since both are non-metals and the electronegativity difference between them is negligible.
Nitrogen has one lone pair of electrons. This lone pair of electrons is shared by nitrogen and positively charged hydrogen. Hence, it is a dative or coordinate bond.
The electrovalent or ionic bond is formed between positively charged nitrogen in ammonium species and negatively charged chloride anion. by donating two electrons by chloride to positively charged nitrogen,
