Why are the lanthanides renamed as lanthanoids?

Expert Answer:
IUPAC currently recommended the name lanthanoid for previously known lanthanide. It is because the suffix "-ide" generally indicates negative ions whereas the suffix "-oid" indicates similarity to one of the members of the containing family of elements.
