why are lanthanides and actinides renamed as lanthanoids and actinoids

Expert Answer:

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) currently recommends using the names lanthanoid and actinoid, rather than the earlier terms lanthanide and actinide, because the suffix "-ide" is generally used for anions.
