CBSE Class 12-science Answered
Which one among the following CH3COOH and CH3CH2OH is a stronger acid and why?

Expert Answer
Acetic acid is ten time stronger than ethyl alcohol. This is because both carboxylic acid and the carboxylate anion are stabilised by resonance but neither the alcohols nor the corresponding alkoxide ions are stabilised by resonance. Alkoxide ions are less stable than the acids and have a strong tendency to release a proton.
