WHICH BACTERIA CAN BREAK DOWN THE CELL WALL OF THE PLANT(CELLULOSE)?
Asked by deviprasadbhat74 | 13th Jul, 2017, 08:24: PM
Degradation of cellulosic plant material is carried out by communities of anaerobic microorganisms (bacteria) that exist in symbiotic association with the host. One of the classic examples of cellulose-digesting bacteria are the Ruminococcus species. This cellulolytic gram-positive bacterium Ruminococcus flavefaciens produces an elaborate cellulosomal enzyme complex that is anchored to the bacterial cell wall and helps in digesting the cellulosic material of a plant cell.
