Fragmentation

Regeneration

1. Occurs in multicellular organisms with relatively simple body organization

1. Occurs in fully differentiated organisms

2. Organisms simply break up into many pieces on maturation and each fragment grows into a new individual

2. If the individual is somehow cut or broken up into many pieces, these pieces grow into separate individuals

3. No specialized cells are involved

3. Carried out by specialized cells, which proliferate and make a mass of cells from which different cells undergo changes to become various cell types and tissues
