Differences between light reaction and dark reaction:

Light reaction

Dark reaction

  • Requires presence of light
  • Does not require presence of light
  • Occurs in thylakoid membranes of grana and stroma lamellae
  • Occurs in stroma of chloroplasts
  • Involves absorption of light energy and its conversion into chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH + H+.
  • Utilises ATP and NADPH2 for the fixation and reduction of CO2 to form carbohydrates.
  • Also called photochemical reaction or Hill reaction
  • Also called biosynthetic phase or Blackman’s reaction or carbon dioxide fixation or Calvin cycle.
