Expert Answer:

Retention - Preservation of the spatial arrangement of bonds at an asymmetric centre during a chemical reaction.

Inversion - In the SN2 reaction, the nucleophile attacks from the back and the leaving group i.e. the haolgen leaves from front. This causes an inversion of configuration.
