There are n arithmetic means between 3 and 17. The ratio of last mean to the first mean is 3:1. Find the value of n.

Let d be the common difference.
If the ratio between last arithmetic mean to first arithmetic mean is 3:1.then we have,  17-d = 3×(3+d) ........(1)

eqn.(1) gives d = 2.

If there are are n arithmetic means between 3 and 17, then (n+2)th term  is given by,   tn+2 = 3 + (n+1)×2 = 17 ...........(2)

By solving eqn.(2), we get n = 6
