Dear Student,

Acid rain is very harmful to agriculture, plants, and animals as it washes away all nutrients which are required for the growth and survival of plants. Acid rain seeps into the ground can dissolve nutrients, such as magnesium and calcium, that trees need to be healthy.
Acid rain also causes aluminum to be released into the soil, that makes it difficult for trees to take up water.

Adding lime (alkaline in nature) to water sources can neutralise the acidifcation in lakes and rivers which makes it drinkable.
But, liming is a temporary solution, and is often used only on the most severely damaged lakes and rivers, so that ecosystems have an opportunity to survive and re-build.
