Potential V at point p due to point charges is given by,

To determine the potential energy of configuration, let us assume intially we had +2q charge at origin .
Workdone W1 to bring +q charge upto (0, a) from infinity is given by
W1 = 2 q2 / [ (4πεo) a ]
Workdone W2 to bring +q charge upto (a, 0) from infinity when charges are alreay there at origin and at a point (0,a)
is given by
W2 = - 2 q2 / [ (4πεo) a ] - q2 / [ (4πεo) √2 a ]
Total workdone , i.e., potential energy of configuration, W1 + W2 = - q2 / [ (4πεo) √2 a ]
-ve sign indicates work is done by field
