one way is that you find the number midway between 3 and 4 by taking their addition and dividing by 3

i.e. it will be 3.5

then if you want more numbers you can  find a number between 3 and 3.5, 3.5 and 4 by the same method given above.

 

if you have to insert n rational numbers between a and b

 then find d=(b-a)/(n+1)

then a+d, a+2d, a+3d... etc will be the numbers between a and b

 the last number willbe

a+(n-1)d
