Obtain the resonant frequency and Q – factor of a series LCR circuit with L = 3H, C = 27𝛍F, R = 7.4Ω. It is desired to improve the sharpness of resonance of circuit by reducing its full width at half maximum by a factor of 2. Suggest a suitable way.

Expert Answer
Resonant angular frequency ωo = 1 / ( L C )1/2 = 1/ ( 3 × 27 × 10-6 )1/2 = 1000/9 ≈ 111 rad/s
Resonant frequency is obtained from , ωo = 2×π×fo ; fo = 111/ (2π) = 17.7 Hz
Q-factor , Q = ωo L / R = 111 × 3 / 7.4 = 333/7.4 = 45
To increase the sharpness of resosnance, L should be increased and R should be decreased
