Is charge quantized

Expert Answer
Fundamental unit of charge in electromagnetism is charge of electron or proton.
Magnitude of this fundmental unit of charge is 1.602 × 10-19 C .
All the charges we come across in electromagnetism is multiple of this fundamental charge.
In this way, we can consider, charge is quantised.
But in nuclear physics that involves study of sub atomic particle, particles can have fraction of fundamental charge.
For example, charge of neutron is zero, but neutron is having non-zero magnetic moment.
This is explained on the basis of quark model, i.e. neutron is made up of one upward quark that has charge (+2/3)e
and two downward quark each have (-1/3)e . Hence total charge is zero, but due to the orientation of these quarks,
neutron is having non-zero magnetic moment
