In the preparation of hydrogen in the laboratory, the end of the thistle funnel in the flask should be dipped in the acid. Why?

During the preparation of hydrogen gas, in the end of the thistle funnel should dip below the level of the dil. acid in the flask, otherwise the hydrogen gas may escape out through the thistle funnel.
