CBSE Class 12-science Answered

In a certain region of space, electric field is along the z-direction throughout. The magnitude of electric field is, however, not constant but increases uniformly along the positive z-direction, at the rate of 105 NC-1 per metre. What are the force and torque experienced by a system having a total dipole moment equal to 10-7 Cm in the negative z-direction?

As shown in figure an electric-dipole is placed in varying electric field so that electric field is in +ve z-direction
and dipole is aligned to field in negative z-direction.

Hence as given in figure, net force on dipole ,   F = q dE  .................(1)

Eqn.(1) is written as,   F = (q×dz)×(dE/dz) ....................(2)

First bracketed term in eqn.(2) is dipole moment and second bracketed term is gradient of field.

Hence we have, F = 10-7×105 = 1.05×10-5 N

Torque = begin mathsize 14px style bold p with bold rightwards arrow on top bold cross times bold space bold E with bold rightwards arrow on top end style
Since field vector and dipole moment vector are anti-parallel, vector product vanishes. Hence torque is zero
