For the sake of simplicity following assumptions are made regarding Earth's magnetism: -

1.  It is assumed that at the centre of Earth is buried a huge bar magnet.

2.  The south pole of the Earth's bar magnet points towards geographic north pole and north pole of earth's magnet is pointing towards the geographic south pole.

3. So, when the bar magnet is suspended from rest, the bar magnet's north pole is attracted by the earth's magnetic south pole and hence it points towards the geographic north pole.

4. And the bar magnet's south pole attracted by the earth's magnetic north pole, which points in the geographic south pole.

Thus, it is said that the suspended magnet alsways points in north-south direction.
