HOW IS REFRACTIVE INDEX OF A MATERIAL RELATED TO SPEED OF LIGHT IN IT?

Refractive index of a medium depends on that the condition that how light travels in a medium.
 
you can understnd that due to the fact that every medium is different from other in formation so the speed of light is different in different mediums. This characterstic of the medium is shown by the the refractive index.
