Child marriage is a violation of child rights, and has a negative impact on physical growth, health, mental and emotional development, and education opportunities.

Hence, the Government of India has raised the marriageable age of female to 18 years and of males to 21 years.

Other measures which can be taken for the same purpose are as follows:

Law enforcement: Capacity-building on laws, support mechanisms such as a child marriage telephone hotline. Child marriage is a punishable offence with a fine up to INR 100,000, or up to two years of imprisonment, or both. It is a non-cognizable and non-bailable offence. Girls’ empowerment: Life skills, protection skills. Community mobilization: Working with influential leaders, oaths and pledges, counselling, folk and traditional media. Promoting convergence of sectors at all levels, in particular with education and social protection schemes and programmes.
