Forests are called the lungs of the environment. Forests perform various functions and hence forest conservation is important in India. Forests produce oxygen which ensures our survival. Forests also prevent soil erosion and keep soil pollution in check. Deforestation, in fact, leads to soil erosion on a large scale. Forests also helps in preventing floods. Forests also play an important part in the water cycle and control moisture levels of our ecosystem. Apart from it, forests are the source of livelihood for tribals and village communities. They are also an abode of country’s rich and varied wild life.
