Expert Answer
Lyman series is given as
for first member n = 2 , λ = 1216 Ao , we get Rydberg constant R as
R = (4/3) × ( 108 / 1216 ) = 1.096 × 105 m-1
Balmer series is given as
for 3rd member , n = 5
Hence wavelength of 3rd member is obtained as
λ = (100/21) × ( 1 / 1.096 × 105 ) = 4.345 × 10-5 m = 0.434 μm
limit of Balmer series is obtained by substituting n = in Balmer series formula .
λ = 4/ R = 4 × 10-5 / 1.096 = 3.65 × 10-5 m
