Orientalists like William Jones and Henry Thomas Colebrooke came to represent a particular attitude towards India which was characterised by a deep respect for ancient cultures, both of India and the West. They opined that Indian civilisation had attained its peak in the ancient times, but since then it had deteriorated. To understand India better, they felt it was necessary to discover the sacred and legal texts which were produced in the ancient period. For only those texts could reveal the real ideas and laws of the Hindus and Muslims, and only a fresh study of such texts could form the basis of future development in India.
