Thomas Babington Macaulay was one of the most vocal critics of the Orientalists. He opined that India was an uncivilised nation and it was the responsibility of the British to civilise it. He said that no branch of Eastern knowledge could be compared to what England had produced. He also urged that the British government should stop wasting public money in promoting oriental learning because it was of no practical use to anyone. He emphasised the need to teach the English language to natives in order to civilise them, change their tastes, values and culture.
