Electric flux through an area is the product of Electric field intensity E over the surface and area A
 
Flux = E×A
 
if field intesnity and area is known, we can calculate the flux through are using the above relation.
 
By Gauss theorem electric flux passing through the surface area of enclosed volume is q/ε ,
where q is the total charge within the enclosed volume and ε is permitivity of enclosed medium.
 
hence, total flux = begin mathsize 14px style surface integral E times d A end style = q/ε  ..................... (1)
above eqn.(1) is useful to find the electric field of charge configuration if there is a symmetry
and field intensity is uniform.
 
For example, as shown in figure, if we need to find electric field intensity due to a charged sphere of radius R
having total charge q at a distance r from centre of sphere, we make an imaginary sphere of radius r.
 
Since electric field E due to the charged sphere is uniform over the surface of imaginary sphere,
By gauss theorem, we have,
 
total flux through surface of imaginary sphere = E×4πr2 = q/ε ................(1)
 
Hence Electric field E due to the charged sphere of radius R at a distance r from centre is given by,
