Differences between RNA polymerase and DNA polymerase:

DNA polymerase

RNA polymerase

  • Synthesizes a ds DNA
  • Synthesizes a ss RNA
  • Requires a primer to begin the replication process
  • Does not require a primer to begin the transcription process.
  • Not capable of initiating a new strand 
  • Capable of initiating a new strand 
  • Active during S phase of interphase
  • Active during G1 and G2 phases of growth phase
  • Has a low error rate
  • Has a comparatively high error rate
