CBSE Class 10 Answered
a) Refractive indices of media A,B,C,D are given
Sr no.: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Medium: A. B. C. D.
Refractive index : 1.33., 1.52., 1.71., 2.42
Use this table to identify the medium in which the speed of light is minimum and why?
b) A ray of light incident obliquely on the face of a rectangular glass slab placed in air emerges from the opposite face parallel to the incident ray. State two factors on which lateral displacement of the emergent ray depends.

Expert Answer
Dear student
Pls. post each query individually.
The speed of light in any medium decreases with the increase in the refractive index of the medium and vice-versa. Hence, speed of light will be minimum in medium D, as it has the highest refractive index.
Lateral displacement depends on:
(i) thickness of the glass slab
(ii) angle of incidence
(iii) r.i. of the glass slab
(iv) wavelength of the incident radiation
Hope this clarifies your doubt.
